Choosing Your Turkey
When at the market, you can choose either a fresh or frozen bird, either pre-brined or all-natural. If you choose an all-natural turkey then you may want to brine the bird. You can make your own brine from scratch, or buy a brine kit with everything you need. You’ll know you are getting a pre-brined turkey by checking the label for salt and other ingredients. Either way, you will produce a juicy, flavorful turkey on your pellet grill. If your turkey is frozen, you should give it anywhere from three to four days to completely thaw.
Turkey Prep 101
If needed, brine your turkey and then you will be ready to finish prepping your bird. Make sure you have removed the giblets from inside the bird cavity. Then, pat the turkey dry with paper towels. You can inject your turkey in the thickest part of the breast, thigh, and wing with your favorite marinade.
Spread room-temperature butter and your favorite poultry seasonings on the turkey and under the skin as well. Place your turkey on an aluminum pan in order to catch any drippings. The drippings can then be used to add flavor to any gravy you plan to make.
Next, place your meat temperature probe in the middle of the breast to cook to temperature, not necessarily time. Remove any pop-up probes that came already inserted in the bird. Now we’re off to cook a perfectly grilled turkey!
Perfectly Grill a Turkey: Let’s Get that Turkey Smokin’
One of the great things about pellet grills is the variety of smoker pellets to choose from. There’s everything from hickory to maple and many blends in between. These pellets provide you with the flavor you’re looking for while smoking or grilling. As you prepare to cook, you will want to load the pellet grill’s hopper with pellets. Preheat the grill with a temperature set at 225 degrees. Make sure your grill vents are open. Once the grill has preheated, you are ready to put the turkey inside. Close the hood of your grill, and allow the turkey to cook.
Once your beautiful bird has reached an internal temperature of 100-110 degrees, increase the grill temperature to 350 degrees. Check your meat probe every 30 minutes, until your grilled turkey’s internal temperature reads 160 degrees. This will take approximately three to four hours.
Once you’ve achieved 160 degrees, take the turkey off the grill. The turkey will continue to cook on its own and should reach 165 degrees on the temperature probe. Let the turkey rest for 30 minutes outside of the grill. Afterward, you’ll be ready to carve your grilled feast and enjoy the wonderful flavor that only a pellet grill can bring.
