What Chemicals Do I Need for My Pool?

Your pool is a place of fun, family time, enjoyment, and relaxation. With good times and great memories being made, your pool deserves the very best pool care and chemicals. But, what pool chemicals do I need for my pool? Here are some of the most common and necessary pool chemicals to keep your pool safe and clean.

Pool Chemicals

Pool Sanitizer

A sanitizer is an essential pool chemical that disinfects your pool water, making it safe to use. The most popular pool sanitizer is chlorine. Chlorine is very effective at eliminating bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms in the water. In general, the chlorine in your pool should be between 1 and 3 Parts Per Million (PPM) and should be tested weekly. Other pool sanitizers include salt and bromine, though at A-Quality Pools we recommend chlorine as the most effective and easiest-to-use pool sanitizer.

pH Adjusters

Maintaining proper pH levels allows your chlorine to be most effective. Plus, correct pH levels make the water more comfortable for swimmers and can help prevent damage to your pool’s surfaces or equipment. We recommend the pH level of your pool water should be between 7.4 and 7.6 at all times. If you test the pH levels and they are not between those levels, adding a pH adjuster will help solve the problem.

Alkalinity Adjusters

Alkalinity and pH work together. While a pool’s pH can easily and quickly change from contaminants as simple as rainwater or a heavy user load, alkalinity helps stabilize the pH and stay balanced. Keeping your alkalinity balanced will help keep your pH in control as well. A pool’s alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 ppm.

Shock Treatments

Shocking your pool is an important maintenance step that helps eliminate contaminants, clean your pool, and prevent your regular sanitizer from working overtime. Shock treatments are ideal for after lots of users have been in the pool, after heavy rainfall, or at the beginning of pool season. Many pool owners also choose to shock their pool as a part of their weekly pool maintenance routine.

Stabilizers

Pool stabilizers help protect chlorine from being broken down by direct sunlight or heat. Without a stabilizer, chlorine will quickly degrade, requiring more frequent additions to maintain a proper chlorine level. In fact, UV rays can break down chlorine by up to 90% in as little as two hours. Using a pool stabilizer prevents this from happening.
